Biography
Angela van der Knaap
She was born in Wateringen, a town between The Hague and Rotterdam in the Netherlands, in 1979. In 2000, Angela graduated from the Willem de Kooning Art Academy in Rotterdam as a Bachelor of Fine Art and Design. Alongside her work as a graphics designer, she is also an expressive artist, who has been exhibiting her acrylic paintings since 2003. Angela’s travels to faraway countries are an important source of inspiration for her colourful paintings and photos.
About the work
’For me, art is a continuous quest for the best visual translation of the vivacity of life,’ says Angela. The themes of her paintings show a fascinating search for the essence of life, which results in intriguing work of a very special own style.
The positive attitude and colourful personality of the cultures encountered during her travels around countries such as Bolivia, Peru, Tibet and Morocco has greatly enriched her outlook on people. ‘I let myself be transported along the stream of life, in which beautiful and painful moments flow together to form a fascinating whole.’
Characteristic of the flow is the unusual shape of a number of panels on which she paints, such as the liquid series, for example. She saws the panels to shape, so that her paintings are no longer limited by the squareness of the base, which enables her to give her ‘story’ even more authority.
